Early Childhood

The early years of a child's life are the most formative. It is during those first years that they become familiar with the sounds and structures of language, learn social behavior and develop the concepts which leads to later learning.

It is most important that children have strong foundations for success.

All contact is in English at the Sydney International School, so as to develop language skills.

Our Day-Care and Butterflies groups provide children aged 2-3 years with stimulation and learning situations which lead on to the Kindergarten and Pre-Primary formal learning experiences.

The Butterfly and Kindergarten groups open 5 half days each week. Parents can choose morning or afternoon sets.

Kindergarten children are introduced to letter shapes and names, one – to – one counting, rhymes and rhythm, gross and fine motor control and a full range of activities which lead to Pre- Primary.

During the year children turn 5 they join the Pre- Primary group and are gently introduced to counting, letter sounds, basic printing, conventions of print, left to right eye movements, patterning etc. Some reading of repetitive text is also involved.

Formal year 1-2-3 classes teach reading, letter shapes, printing, sentence structure, spelling, addition and subtraction, skip counting etc.

Printing leads to running writing in year 3.

During ECE years appropriate science, social studies and health studies are also introduced. Art, dance and performance assist in the development of confidence and creativity.

The Sydney International School ECE centre is fully equipped using Australian teaching aids and equipment specially designed to support and implement the New South Wales Curriculum.
